Yesterday a friend posted one of those “fill in the blank” comments on Facebook. You know the ones, where you have to answer the same set of questions and then copy and paste it to your own Facebook wall. It was a list of questions to ask your children to see what they think of you. My friend asked his four-year-old and as expected the answers were adorable. Of course that led me to wonder how my own teenagers would answer (surely they pay attention to me and all the thoughts on life I’m constantly sharing with them). So I asked each one the same questions. Here is a transcript of what they answered (pretty much word for word).

Fidgety Twin A, 15

(She was designated “A” by the doctor during the ultrasounds because she was lower in the uterus and would be born first.)

1. What is something I always say to you? I dunno

2. What makes me happy? Knitting

3. What makes me sad? Not knitting

4. How do I make you laugh? You’re dumb {She means, when I act silly or stupid}

5. What was I like as a child? I dunno

6. How old am I? 40-something. You’re old. You’re a dinosaur

7. How tall am I? I dunno. 5’11” or something {Nope}

8. What is my favorite thing to do? Knit

9. What do I do when you’re not around? Probably knit

14. What do you enjoy doing with me? I dunno

Clearly she is thoughtful and invested in our times together.

13. What is my favorite food? I don’t know. I have no clue.

14. What do you enjoy doing with me? Laughing.

“Hey, mom. Is this for your blog?” It is now.

Okay, to be fair, Fidgety Twin A tends to be more reserved and thoughtful in her interactions with the world. FTB has no such reservations

Fidgety Son, 19

1. What is something I always say to you? {Here he does an exasperated sigh} {As in, I sigh at him. A lot. He’s not wrong}

2. What makes me happy? Knitting and TV.

3. What makes me sad? When I’m mean to you. And TV {I do get unnaturally invested in TV characters.}

5. What was I like as a child? I dunno. Probably naggy and annoying.

6. How old am I? 43

7. How tall am I? 5’9” on good days. Sometimes you’re 5’8” {He’s right. He’s actually quoting what I have said to other people.}

8. What is my favorite thing to do? Knit and TV.

9. What do I do when you’re not around? Knit and TV. And probably kissing dad.

10. What am I really good at? Knitting and graphic design.

11. What is something I’m not good at? Math

12. What do I do for a job? Graphic designer

13. What is my favorite food? Anything dad cooks? {My husband is an AMAZING cook. I do love just about everything he makes.}

14. What do you enjoy doing with me? Watching TV. {This sounds passive, but really, both of us are talkers and we live narrate shows and movies when we’re together. It’s pretty hilarious. And fun.}

Okay, well, apparently as they get older, they pay more attention. He’s spot on for most things, but not all. So, of course, I figured I’d check in with Fidgety Husband. We’ve been together almost 22 years. He should know me pretty well.

Fidgety Husband, 46

1. What is something I always say to you? Can you help me remember… {I do say this. All the damn time}

2. What makes me happy? Just one thing? Probably knitting.

4. How do I make you laugh? Tell a silly joke.

6. How old am I? 44. No, 43. {That’s okay, I’m usually a year off for him, too}

7. How tall am I? 5’9”

8. What is my favorite thing to do? Knit

9. What do I do when you’re not around? Probably knit.

10. What am I really good at? Talking to people.

12. What do I do for a job? Graphic designer

13. What is my favorite food? Oh, gee. So many. Something sweet. Anything with cake in the name.

14. What do you enjoy doing with me? Cuddling

Fidgety Husband for the win. He is pretty much spot on (though I would put his homemade deep dish pizza in my top three favorite foods).

It is interesting to see each family member define me slightly different. And while none of my children said anything about how much I love them, I know for a fact each child knows how much I adore them.

And clearly, I love a dumb joke (or pun).

Have you shared something like this with your own family? Let me know what happened in the comments.
