Veggie Baby Hats

VeggieBabyHatAll

When you have a group of friends who fall within a certain age, sometimes they all manage to have babies within a couple of months of each other. And sometimes—despite having almost six months to make a baby object before these women who don’t live nearby have arranged to be in town for a baby shower that you are hosting—you neglect to make any of the adorable baby sweaters or fancy hats you have purchased patterns and books for. When that happens, a quick search on Ravelry will show you the most adorable and QUICK hats possible: Veggies! …

WiP: Super secret

SecretWiP900x600

Look, I can’t actually show you what I’m working on. This is a gift for someone I love who happens to be a regular reader of this blog. So I can’t even tell you what pattern. But check out this yarn! …

Flying Geese Shawl

FlyingGeeseFull

Usually I will find a pattern I love, download it, dig through my stash for an appropriate yarn and begin knitting. Often, as I knit, I will begin to understand the thing I’m knitting will be a gift for someone. Every so often, I don’t read the directions fully and don’t realize I’ve made a major project mistake until halfway into the project. And sometimes, that works out okay. This was one of those projects. …

Gifts for the nephews

NephewsScarfClose

One of my big projects for this past Christmas was to make a scarf and hat set for each of my four nephews. There is a substantial age gap between the youngest and oldest and I didn’t want to ask each of them their head size and spoil the surprise. So of course I did what any good knitter would do: I decided to wing it. …

WiP Wednesday: Mistake Rib Scarf

MistakeRibWiP

It’s October and I’ve finished the projects on my needles that were taking forever. Now a couple quick Christmas gifts for some of my favorite people. Last year I made two of my nephews quick and simple hats out of bulky yarn. This year I thought I’d make a hat and scarf set for all of my nephews. It’s a basic hat from The Knitter’s Handy Book of Patterns. The hat seems like it might be small and it’s certainly dense. I think I’ll try larger needles next time. …

Colonnade Shawl

I’m terrible at remembering to knit things ahead of gift-giving events. Christmas I remember, but I don’t really plan it well so not everyone will get a knit gift. I’m a slow knitter and I really knit for my own enjoyment. It keeps my hands busy. It’s comforting. I love to see the pattern come to life. To see the yarn take shape in something beautiful. And I’ll say it: to marvel at this beautiful piece of art I have created with my own two hands.

This spring I was digging around Ravelry looking for a new shawl pattern (you know, because the dozens I have saved from previous Ravelry searches weren’t quite what I wanted). I came across the pattern for Colonnade Shawl by Stephen West. …
